Fernando Tordo

Biography

Fernando Tordo is one of the most prolific and beloved songwriters in the history of Portuguese music. Born in Lisbon in 1948, he has built a career of remarkable longevity — spanning more than five decades — as a singer, composer and writer, and is widely regarded as a key figure in Portuguese contemporary song for the breadth and originality of his work. His name is inseparable from his long creative partnership with the poet José Carlos Ary dos Santos. Tordo composed the music and Ary dos Santos wrote the words — a union that gave Portugal an intemporal repertoire including “Tourada”, “Estrela da Tarde”, “Lisboa Menina e Moça”, “Cavalo à Solta” and “Adeus Tristeza”. In 1973 he represented Portugal at the Eurovision Song Contest with “Tourada”, after winning the Festival RTP da Canção — a song whose veiled message turned it into a symbol of the years that led to the Carnation Revolution. Throughout his career he has given his songs to many of the great voices of Portuguese and Brazilian music, from Carlos do Carmo and Simone de Oliveira to Mariza, Carminho, Ana Moura, António Zambujo and Dulce Pontes. A Commander of the Order of Merit, Fernando Tordo continues to bring his vast body of work to the stage, revisiting timeless songs with new arrangements and fresh sonorities that speak to audiences across generations. Recent projects include the celebratory tour “60 Years of Songs” and new orchestral and duet recordings that reaffirm the enduring luminosity of his music. Ars Luminae is proud to represent Fernando Tordo, an artist whose songs are part of the collective memory of the Portuguese language and whose voice continues to move audiences worldwide.
