Valter Rolo is one of the most respected pianists, composers and musical directors in Portuguese music. Born in Setúbal in 1974, he studied classical music for eight years at the Conservatório Regional de Setúbal before turning to jazz at the Escola de Jazz do Barreiro, where he would later teach harmony and piano. The piano — and its many derivations — has always been his instrument of choice.
For more than two decades he has been one of the discreet architects of Portuguese song. He has produced and musically directed records and shows for Fernando Tordo, Paulo de Carvalho, Anabela, Toy, Vânia Fernandes, Lara Li and Marco Paulo, and has written arrangements for Carolina Deslandes, Bárbara Tinoco, António Zambujo, Rui Veloso, Áurea, Cuca Roseta, Marisa Liz, Camané, Carlos do Carmo and Ricardo Ribeiro. He has composed for Carminho, Sara Correia, A Garota Não, Raquel Tavares and Maria Emília. A resident pianist at landmark Portuguese television galas — from the Globos de Ouro to the RTP anniversaries — he has also taken part in countless projects and orchestras led by the late maestro José Marinho, sharing the stage with some of the finest Portuguese and international musicians.
In 2026 he steps into the spotlight with «O Som da Palavra · Vol. 1», his first record under his own name — an album of songs in which piano, poetry and contemporary composition meet jazz and the sonorities of the Portuguese-speaking world. The central voice is that of Beatriz Nunes (former vocalist of Madredeus), with lyrics by Cátia Oliveira (A Garota Não), Tiago Torres da Silva, Fernando Gomes dos Santos and Beatriz Nunes herself, and arrangements created in partnership with composer Lino Guerreiro. More than a concert, «O Som da Palavra» is an immersive, cinematic experience where word and sound meet. The recording was supported by the Fundo Cultural da SPA.
Ars Luminae is proud to represent Valter Rolo, a musician who, after decades shaping the work of others, now brings his own voice — where music is born from the word — to stages worldwide.
