TRIO DOURO - Ars Luminae

Biography

Trio Douro is a piano trio of exceptional artistic refinement, formed in 2020 by three members of the Orquestra Filarmónica Portuguesa. Uniting Carolina Frederico (violin) from Brazil, Jed Barahal (cello) from the United States, and Vasco Dantas (piano) from Portugal, the ensemble draws on three continents of musical culture to forge a distinctive and deeply communicative voice in chamber music. Since its founding, Trio Douro has performed at some of Portugal’s most prestigious venues, including the Salão Árabe of the Palácio da Bolsa, the Museu Romântico, the Museu Almeida Garrett in Porto, and the Teatro Maria Matos in Lisbon. In 2024 alone, the trio gave more than 20 concerts at the Palácio da Bolsa, and was invited to perform at the Festival Algarve Music Series at the Teatro Lethes in Faro. In 2025, the ensemble embarks on an international tour with the Concertos Mittelthurgau series in Switzerland, further cementing its growing reputation on the European stage. Their repertoire spans the great pillars of the piano trio canon — Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Arensky, and Rachmaninoff — performed with the technical command and interpretive depth that each member has cultivated across decades of solo and orchestral careers. Carolina Frederico holds a Bachelor’s degree from the Eastman School of Music and a Master’s from the University of Alberta, and spent over 15 years as concertmaster and soloist with the Teatro Nacional Cláudio Santoro Orchestra in Brasília. Jed Barahal trained at the Juilliard School and Yale University, studied under masters including Pierre Fournier and Janos Starker, and has served as principal cellist of the São Paulo State Symphony and the Toulouse Capitol Orchestra. He has been a professor at ESMAE (Porto Polytechnic Institute) since 1993. Vasco Dantas graduated with First Class Distinction from the Royal College of Music in London and completed his Master’s with distinction at the University of Münster. A prize-winner in over 50 international competitions, he has performed as soloist at Carnegie Hall, the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow, and the Hong Kong City Hall Concert Hall, working with conductors and orchestras across four continents.
