The Opera Locos
Five operatic voices, opera without the solemnity, and an audience that sings along.
The show
A troupe of five eccentric opera singers prepares a recital of the genre’s great composers. As the evening unfolds, each reveals hidden passions, with unpredictable consequences.
The Opera Locos brings together famous arias by Puccini, Mozart, Rossini, Verdi and Bizet and pop classics, from Whitney Houston and Mika to Frank Sinatra, a-ha and Elton John. The voices sing live over an orchestral track recorded by the Orquesta Sinfónica VERUM.
The characters are recognisable at first sight: Alfredo, a worn-out tenor with a glorious past; Enrique, a baritone with a macho swagger; Franelli, a pop-loving countertenor; Maria, a dreamy soprano; Carmen, an untameable mezzo. The story is told through gesture and music.
In an opera masterclass the audience is invited to sing, and the singers come down into the stalls. The arias are sung in their original language and the voice-over can be adapted into Portuguese. It appeals to opera lovers and to those who have never been to the opera.
Premiered in Madrid in 2018, it won the 2019 Max Award for Best Musical in Spain. It has played the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, several seasons in Paris and, in 2026, a season at Sadler’s Wells in London. The same year, the Argentinian version won three Hugo Awards.
